Taib, Jabu urged to step down
S Pathmawathy | Nov 1, 08 5:21pm
First, he called Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and Umno ‘bullies’.

Now Parti Rakyat Sarawak’s (PRS) former publicity head of its Balleh division Beginda Minda has boldly called on PBB president Abdul Taib Mahmud to step down as Sarawak chief minister.

Revealing bundles of flawed strategies in the Taib administration on Mkini.tv’s ‘Uncensored’ talk show, Beginda also held long-serving Iban Deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu equally responsible for the agony and sufferings of the Dayak community, adding that “Jabu should also seriously consider retirement as soon as possible”.

beginda minda prs 011108 francis“Taib’s era has passed. It is time for him to give way to the younger generation to take over the reins of power in Sarawak.

“Twenty-seven years as chief minister is long enough,” Beginda told ‘Uncensored’ host Francis Paul Siah.

Beginda insisted that he was not launching a personal attack at these two Sarawak leaders but that he has decided to come out publicly to “say what has to be said” as he (Beginda) is also a member of a BN component party.

“My request is for Taib and Jabu to step down gracefully and retire as honourable and respected statesmen. Surely, it is better to go that way than to be forced out of office through people’s power,” he reasoned.

“It is clear to most people that the days when they (Taib and Jabu) have been most effective and most active are nearly gone. There are now many capable and qualified younger people with fresh ideas and bolder visions to lead the state.

“Taib has been active in politics since the first days of independence in 1963 and has been chief minister of Sarawak since 1981. Alfred Jabu has been in active politics since 1974 and was made deputy chief minister shortly after.

“Admittedly, these two gentlemen have done much for Sarawak.  There have been pluses, I grant that, but there are many negatives as well,” he said.

Row, row, row your boat to Kapit

Beginda touched on several issues close to the hearts of Sarawak Dayaks during the interview.

He spoke at length on the land issue, lopsided development in the state, lack of employment opportunities and the “sufferings” of his Iban community.

“It is a fact that after 45-long years of independence, many areas in Sarawak are still not being developed, including my hometown of Kapit.

beginda minda prs 011108 04“Kapit is still the same as it has been during the colonial time of the British. During the time of Rajah Charles Vyner Brooke, we were rowing sampans as there were no roads to get out of Kapit.

“Today, there are still no roads linking Kapit to other towns and we still have to use boats … only that this time, the boats have engines.

“I know that the two gentlemen (Taib and Jabu) will not be able to tolerate my public expression of these grouses. But the truth must be told. Enough is enough … my advice to them is not to wait until people demonstrate in the streets,” he said.

Beginda also reiterated that PBB has an ‘apparent policy’ of undermining their coalition partners in “varying degrees of subtlety”.

“The BN partners – Sarawak United People’s Party (Supp), PRS or Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) – are in themselves complete organisations and their interests need to be respected. Interference by a senior partner, no matter the guise, is a form of bullying.

“Bullying goes against the grain of good and just participation in political affairs and dilutes the effectiveness of coalition partners when in fact they (the partners) should be effective and are seen as effective.

“Inevitably, a coalition partner which is denied an effective delivery system will be held in ever diminishing esteem by the electorate,” said Beginda.

Beginda was removed as publicity chief of the PRS Balleh division on Oct 27 following his ‘bully’ statement published in Malaysiakini two days earlier. He maintained that he has no regrets over what he said.

taib mahmud alfred jabu pbb prs 011108Asked whether Taib could be behind the disbandment of Dayak-based parties, Beginda said: “It is very clear.”

“One of the impacts of political interference has been to wreck the political cohesiveness of the Dayak people.

“Every decade, it seems that the Dayaks have to create a new party and as long as the party is young and new, it will be a junior partner. This is what PBB wants,” said Beginda.

parliament seats sarawak 241008“If you look at the history of Snap, PBDS, SPDP and PRS, you will know what I am talking about,” he added.

Allow Dayaks to own their land

Beginda also rebuked Sarawak’s land policies which have not been reviewed since the 1960s although Taib has been in power for 27 years.

“There have been many disputes over land ownership and the exploitation of resources, such as timber, which have pitted timber companies against natives who have traditionally regarded tracts of land to be theirs,” he lamented.

“In Sarawak, million of acres of NCR land are affected and the economic opportunity for the Dayaks from their lands are lost. The natives need the ownership of their lands to be put in order through proper surveying,” said Beginda.

He urged the state government to adhere to growing public dissatisfaction regarding land policy and ensure commitment to review current land policies.

beginda minda interview 301008 03“The uproar last month in Bekenu Sibuti, where the Kedayan people were under threat of an eviction order apparently made to make way for plantation development, need not have happened if a proper land policy that protects native lands and if a proper land adjudication had been put in place.

“This is no longer just an abuse of power but oppression of the people. If this goes on, the natives will lose everything,” he said.

On the matter of Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Salcra) which maintains land development and social-economic wealth of the state, Beginda said: “Salcra could do a much better job but it is not doing that”.

“There are grumblings that participants do not get the so-called ‘dividends’ that they feel they are entitled to or that their lands have been bought over by those with vested interests.

“Yet it is possible for Salcra to do very well and earn the participants plenty of rewards had legislations and measures been introduced which prevent estate lands from being sold and transferred to other parties.

“For instance, Felda, the federal government’s land development agency, is so well run that it is now prepared to spread its operation overseas. Why can’t Salcra be as successful as Felda?” he asked.

No job opportunities in Sarawak

Beginda also raised grouses relating to employment opportunities in the state, where although Sarawak is rich in resources, large number of the natives still flee to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore in search of employment.

“We have plenty of timber, coal, oil and gas. These are ingredients for a strong economy. We should be an employment haven … yet now in Sarawak we have problems regarding the economy and employment.

beginda minda prs 011108 02“In Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, there are as many as 60,000 Sarawakians. In Johor alone, more than 16,000 Sarawakians are employed there.
“Ask them why they prefer to work in Peninsular Malaysia and most will reply that there are better job opportunities there.

“Why can’t Sarawak create jobs for its own people? Surely, it is now time for a change of leadership,” he added.

Towards the end of the show, Beginda spoke in Iban as he made an impassioned appeal to his community to stay focussed and united as they demand for their rights in Sarawak.

Sabtu, 1 November 2008 • SUARA KeADILan Online

Perhimpunan agung Umno 24-28 Mac
Jimadie Shah Othman | Oct 31, 08 6:15pm

Tegah guna jentera k’jaan

“Kamu mahu bertanding, kamu bertandinglah. Kalau orang tanya bagaimana beliau (Mohd Ali) hendak bertanding. Biarlah dia bertanding, apa salahnya.

Abdul Razak Baginda acquitted
S Pathmawathy | Oct 31, 08 10:00am
The Shah Alam High Court today acquitted political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda of abetting the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Justice Mohd Zaki Md Yasin ruled that the prosecution has failed to prove a case against Abdul Razak.

razak baginda acquitted 311008 14“I find there is no prima facie case for him to answer his charge. He is therefore acquitted and discharged,” said Mohd Zaki.

Abdul Razak, a close associate of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak had faced the death penalty by hanging if found guilty of abetting the 2006 murder of his former lover Altantuya, whose body was blown up with explosives in a jungle clearing.

razak baginda acquitted 311008 09In one of the longest hearings in Malaysia’s history, the court spent 151 days hearing testimony from 84 witnesses on whether Abdul Razak and two police officers accused of carrying out the murder should face trial.

The court however ordered chief inspector Azilah Hadri, 32 and corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, 37 – from the elite Special Action Force (UTK) which guards the prime minister and deputy prime minister – to enter their defence to the charge of murder.

Both have elected to testify under oath and will take the stand on Nov 10.

The prosecution is expected to file an appeal against Abdul Razak’s acquittal.

razak baginda acquitted 311008 10Deputy public prosecutor Tun Majid Tun Hamzah said the decision could be contested.

“We will consider appealing the decision. The battle is not over yet,” he said.

On hearing that he could walk free, Abdul Razak, 48, hugged his wife and daughter from the dock while his elderly parents sat crying in the court.

“I just want to go home,” he said as he was escorted out through a huge media scrum at about 10.10am.

Altantuya’s father distraught over decision

Altantuya’s father Setev Shaariibuu, who has repeatedly criticised the handling of the case, was left distraught by the decision.

razak baginda acquitted 311008 07“I am not satisfied. My daughter knows only one Malaysian and it is Razak Baginda. Now my daughter is dead and Baginda is freed… the country has lost credibility in the (eyes of the) world,” he told reporters.

Karpal Singh, who represents the Altantuya’s family, said that based on the evidence Abdul Razak should have been called to defend himself against the accusations.

“They should not have acquitted him at this stage of the trial,” he said.

Najib, who is expected to be appointed premier next March when Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi stands down, has vehemently denied any involvement in the case.

razak baginda acquitted 311008 13Top blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin has repeatedly linked Najib and his wife to the murder on his popular website Malaysia Today. Raja Petra was detained since last month under the tough security law for insulting Islam.

Abdullah last month defended his deputy over new allegations that Najib interfered in the case, after Malaysia Today published an SMS text message exchange purportedly between the deputy premier and Abdul Razak’s lawyer.

razak baginda acquitted 311008 06Altantuya, the mother of two sons aged four and 10, was allegedly shot before her body was blown up with explosives two years ago.

Azilah and Sirul are jointly charged with murdering Altantuya, 28, at a location between Lot 12843 and Lot 16735 in Mukim Bukit Raja, Selangor between 10am on Oct 19, 2006 and 1am the following day.

Abdul Razak was charged with abetting them. He is a known confidante of Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, having worked on government arms procurement projects while the latter was defence minister.

Anwar wishes Abdul Razak well

Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim, during the lunch break in his sodomy trial case, said that he wished Abdul Razak well.

the altantuya trial fact box 050607“At the personal and family level, I wish Razak well. He is now back with the family, but the issue here revolves around the court procedure and the investigation (into the murder).

“There is growing perception that the investigation was not done professionally. There is a clear motive to cover up (the murder), a lot of evidence was not adduced.

“The prosecution has failed to conduct the case professionally from the beginning, changes were (also) made to the court and the judge.

“Now that there is more allegations involving DPM Najib – the SMSes and (other) evidence the public has raised a number of times – this case clearly is bigger (than just Abdul Razak).”

Anwar himself faces trial over sodomy allegations, which he says have been concocted by leading figures in the government because they fear he could use information on the Altantuya case to bring about their downfall.

Mahkamah bebaskan Razak Baginda
Oct 31, 08 10:12am

Raja Petra sedang ditahan mengikut Akta Keselamatan Dalam Negeri (ISA).

Economists: Fall in oil prices, gov’t should revise budget
Beh Lih Yi | Oct 29, 08 5:17pm
Is there any immediate risk of the government running out of money?

This question is increasingly being raised as the government’s revenue estimation in Budget 2009 may be significantly affected by the plunge in global oil prices.

klse asia stock share market down crash turmoil 060307In Budget 2009, tabled on Aug 29 by then finance minister and premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the government had used US$125 per barrel as the benchmark to estimate the revenue it would earn from sales of crude oil.

However, global oil prices have since dropped by half – to about US$65 per barrel – and this is expected to adversely affect the government’s income as over 40 percent of the federal budget comes from state-owned oil company Petronas.

lim teck gheeEconomist Lim Teck Ghee, who is director of think-tank Centre for Policy Initiatives, said the government would run a “great risk” of running out of money if the global economic meltdown is prolonged.

“Government revenue will fall drastically if the recession continues for a few years. Not only would Budget 2009 have to be revised but the entire Ninth Malaysia Plan will have to be reviewed,” he told Malaysiakini.

Lim urged the finance minister to immediately revise the budget by taking into account the fall in oil revenue, which contributes close to half the national revenue.

The government’s basis for projected oil revenue in Budget 2009 appears to have been a misjudgement.

Unlike Malaysia, the world’s largest oil producer, Saudi Arabia, had used oil prices of US$65 per barrel in planning next year’s budget.

Given the global economic slowdown, most economists do not expect oil prices to go beyond US$100 per barrel anytime soon.

‘Revise Budget figures’

dr yeah kim lengAnother economist, Dr Yeah Kim Leng, argued that it is crucial for the government to slash its spending as announced by Abdullah yesterday.

Abdullah said that all ministries would be required to put on hold all non-essential projects.

“It’s not an issue of running out of money. It’s either the fiscal deficit will increase or the government will have to reduce its spending and look for new resources,” the chief economist of rating agency Ram Holdings Bhd said when contacted.

pm abdullah ahmad badawi suspend eurocopter ec725 deal ministry of defense event 281008 03“The impact will not be that great because the amount of the oil subsidy (the government pays) will be much less (when the world oil price drops) – there are some compensating elements,” he noted.

Citing the example of Abdullah’s decision to put on hold the RM1.7 billion Eurocopter deal, Yeah said it was essential for the government to cut down its expenditure.

He echoed Lim’s statement that the government should re-examine its spending in Budget 2009 or the fiscal deficit would balloon.

The opposition has called on the government to table a new budget to take into consideration the fall in oil prices and the global economic crisis.

Audit underway into PKFZ scandal
Kuek Ser Kuang Keng | Oct 29, 08 10:46am
International accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) has begun auditing the controversial government ‘soft loan’ provided to Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ), among other contentious issues.

lee hwa bengPort Klang Authority (PKA) chairperson Lee Hwa Beng told Malaysiakini that a six-member team led by a PWC senior manager has been conducting the probe.

“Auditing started this month and is expected to be completed by year’s end. Whether or not the report will be made public will be decided by the transport minister,” he said.

He said the audit team has been given authority to interview all current and former staff members as well as board members. Letters have been sent to all relevant parties and individuals involved in the probe.

ong tee keat pkfz klang visit 060508 05“We hope everyone will cooperate with the auditors,” Lee said.

He also said the appointment of an international audit firm is to build confidence that the probe is being conducted by an independent entity.

On why auditing has been delayed – when an announcement on this had been made in May – he attributed it to procedural requirements.

pkfz port klang free zone the white elephant project connections update 291008“PKFZ engaged the services of PWC by direct appointment instead of calling an open tender, he said. As such, approval had to be subsequently sought from the Finance Ministry.

The audit exercise was announced by Transport Minister Ong Tee Keat, following a public outcry over a RM4.6 billion ‘soft loan’ given by the government.

Ong said details of repayment would be properly audited and disclosed at the appropriate time, to avoid any misconception of a government bailout.

The project came to public attention after news reports raised issues linked to land acquisition and questioned if the project would become a ‘white elephant’.

PKFZ, owned by PKA, was conceptualised as a regional hub for export and transhipment of manufactured goods costing RM1.85 billion. But the cost rose to RM4.6 billion by the time the project was completed.

‘Business picking up’

On PKFZ’s performance, Lee claimed that business has picked up. Since May, proceeds from annual rental have doubled from RM7 million to RM15 million.

“Besides operating the port, our job is to get more tenants to occupy the industrial buildings in PKFZ,” he said.

Lee and new general manager Lim Thean Shiang were appointed to the PKA in April.

Ong had entrusted Lee with appointing the auditor and to assist the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) should the latter conduct a probe.

Lee, however, said there has not been any follow-up on the matter by the PAC since he took over the post

Pakatan weary of 1969, says MB
Fauwaz Abdul Aziz | Oct 25, 08 9:50pm
Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the opposition Pakatan Rakyat is treading very carefully towards forming the federal government, lest certain quarters be provoked to completely suspend the country’s system of democracy.

He said the suspension of Parliament and the state of emergency called – and since then still technically in place – after the wins by the opposition in the May 1969 general election offer sombre lessons for those seeking drastic change.

khalid ibrahim selangor state budget pc 120808 02Khalid said that while Anwar Ibrahim, who is parliamentary opposition leader and PKR de facto head, harbours strong ambitions of leading the change of government, he is also painfully aware that such moves could lead to a change in the very system of governance itself.

“We are (still) working towards it. Anwar is very careful – we have to be very careful. Because any rushed action may end up in curtailing the democratic process. We do know Malaysia had that experience in 1969,” he told MalaysiaIndru editor Ji Wi Kathaiah in a recent interview.

“It is not in our interests that by seeking to acquire government, people are deprived of democracy,” he added.

“He has got an idealism such that if you can get to rule the federal government, it would be better,” Khalid added in reference to the five Pakatan-led states.

“But I am of the opinion that we have to be careful, that by taking over government, you do not trade in democracy,” he stressed.

Sept 16 deadline missed

Anwar, formerly the deputy premier and finance minister, has declared he had enough supporters from the ruling BN coalition to topple its government.

Pakatan Rakyat, which controls 81 parliamentary seats, needs another 31 MPs for a simple majority to form the federal government.

anwar ibrahim and september 16 eventSince then, Anwar has missed the Sept 16 self-imposed deadline. While asserting that Pakatan still has several other options to explore, he conceded several days ago that he was running out of options in trying to upset Barisan rule.

“I am not saying we have no options left, but I’m saying it’s getting to be much more difficult,” Anwar was quoted as saying.

Khalid said while he has decades of experience as a captain of several government-linked companies and in corporate takeovers, politics is a whole new ball game with many more risks to consider.

However slim the chances that the Barisan government would repeat its crackdown on dissent as seen about four decades ago, they still warrant caution on the part of Pakatan, said Khalid.

“Well, you calculate the probability. You may say it is a small probability. But however small it is… I’m among those who are not seeking to wrest control of the government at all costs. The people have to come first, and everything else should follow.

“Of course, we have a situation where once we do it, we have to go back to the people and decide whether you want us to be in power or not. There may have to be elections as early as possible in order to gain legitimate recognition of this new government.

“But of course, in politics, the game is fluid. I do not have any experience in this. Logically, I can think. But politics is not logical. Taking over a corporation, I can handle. But taking over a government, you are handling different groups of people” he said.

In the one-hour interview, Khalid also spoke on the latest developments surrounding the Wives of Selangor State Assemblymen and MPs Charity and Welfare Organisation (Balkis), the state of the ten ‘exco bungalows’, and plans for state officials and elected representatives to declare their assets and liabilities.

He also spoke of the state government’s plans to create a system of checks and balances at the level of local government to minimise  corruption.

PRS: Umno is a bully, so is PBB
Oct 25, 08 9:41am
A Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) division leader has described Umno at the federal level and Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) in Sarawak as ‘too dominant’ and indeed are ‘bullies’ in their dealings with smaller component parties in the Barisan Nasional.

Taking a cue from the statement of former MCA president Ong Ka Ting who has expressed similar sentiments, Balleh PRS publicity chief Beginda Minda said this tendency of one party dominance has an adverse impact on public perception and intra BN relationships.

“It is my view that in Sarawak, PRS, a component party inside the state and federal Barisan Nasional has been bullied by what could collectively be called the “BN leadership,” he said in a statement to Malaysiakini today

Elaborating, Beginda explained that in the case of Sarawak, the BN system has generated a state level entity where there has been one dominant party, the PBB which is leading the state BN government.Very powerful Taib Mahmud

PBB president Abdul Taib Mahmud is also state BN chair and chief minister of Sarawak for the past 27 years.

taib mahmud and sarawak new state assembly buildingHe has long been described as Sarawak’s most powerful personality and is known to be intolerant of dissent within the party’s ranks.

“Just as there is a public perception of Umno being too dominant at the national level, there is also a similar perception that in Sarawak, the dominant role of  PBB has had an effect on the conduct of smaller parties, such as PRS,” Beginda said.

Prime Minister and national BN chair Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has responded immediately to Ong’s remarks on Oct 18, denying that Umno has bullied others in the BN. Umno information chief Muhammad Muhammad Taib has also asked for proofs of Umno bullying.

Responding to Muhammad Taib’s request, Beginda cited two recent instances of Umno and PBB bullying PRS.

The first was during the 2006 state election when a component BN party was ‘allowed’ to steal a PRS seat

“Neither the state nor federal BN intervened effectively to stop a component party from interfering in the affairs of another. Where was BN when effective action was needed? It was as if the BN was shutting its proverbial “eye” to the intra-BN infighting in Sarawak. By letting the problem fester, it was acting as a bully, not a problem solver,” Beginda pointed out.

The second incident was during the March general election when two of the party’s candidates were rejected without any reason.

Beginda queried why was PBB allowed to choose its candidates to contest on PRS seats.

“Where is the principle that component parties ought to be free to conduct their own affairs and make the selection of candidates themselves? Is this not a case of dominance and bullying?” he asked.

“As a result, PRS was caught in a dilemma. The choices were two: PRS could have rejected the suggested replacements or it could have accepted them. A refusal to accept the replacement candidates could have left the party open to accusations of being disloyal to BN, a grave enough political sin. Such a move would have put PRS leadership in hot soup and perhaps alienate the party from BN.

james masing“The impact on PRS was that it was a tremendous “let down”. To paraphrase Dato Seri Ong, the perception was that a partner in Sarawak BN – the PBB – was being “too dominant”.

Despite these internal BN problems, Sarawak managed to deliver all but one of its 31 parliamentary seats to the BN. The ruling coalition only lost Bandar Kuching to DAP.

PRS is led by Dr James Masing who is the party’s founder president. He is also state land development minister.

PRS has six members of parliament. Its vice-president Joseph Entulu  serves at the federal level as deputy minister for national and rural development.

Other options, other than BN

On the current situation within the Sarawak BN, Beginda said it would seem that “we in PRS are still back in a bad school environment where the weaker students are being bullied by the more senior ones.”

He called for a mechanism in the BN for components parties to be protected from the predation of others, no matter what the excuse.

“Umno and PBB could be strong but that should be so without being dominant up to the level that it could openly ‘interfere’ into the internal affairs of another component party,” said Beginda..

parliament seats sarawak 241008Stressing that the BN leadership must be just, Beginda said the organisational integrity of a component party like PRS must be maintained.

“Its decisions, such as the nomination of candidates, must be respected. Failure to do this could lead to fragmentation at the peripheries and ultimately could spread to the centre,” he warned.

Beginda also emphasised on the need for re-generation, re-vitalization and re-growth within the BN..

“The BN machinery is seen as an ossified body, presently unable to respond effectively to the needs of component parties and that of the country as a whole. The message is that such dominance need to be rectified and ways be found as a means of resuscitating the rest of the BN partners so that the BN machinery could be energized and respond to the people more effectively, “ he said.

Beginda reminded the BN top leadership that the coalition must wake up to current political realities and stop being in a state of denial.

“Before, there was only BN which could provide the  national leadership. After March 2008, it is clear that PRS has other, perhaps better, options,” he added with that friendly ‘warning’

Invitation: Public Forum – The ISA and the Police Reform Process: What’s next after Pak Lah

In December 2003, the Prime Minister, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced the formation of a Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysia Police to examine the conduct and management of the police. He went on to say, “The Police Must Be Well-Versed In Human Rights When Discharging Their Duties And Dealing With The Public. Police Brutality, Poor Service, Corruption And Other Negative Traits Must Be Eradicated”

In 2005, the Royal Commission released a report and make 125 recommendation to improve the police force. The commission highlighted in its report the numerous deficiencies in the PDRM’s compliance with human rights obligation as the consequence of two main factors: Firstly-The existence of a range of preventive legislations that places restrictions upon fundamental liberties. The second is police abuse of safeguards provided for human rights in prescribed laws and regulation

Today, it’s already been 4 years since the Royal Commission launched its report and recommendations to make the PDRM accountable and adhere to human rights principles. Despite, the recommendations, we continue to witness police abuse of power and arbitrary arrest and detention of people. The latest score of ISA arrest of Teresa Kwok, Raja Petra and Tan Hoon Cheng and the arrest of Suaram activist Cheng Lee Wee under Section 28 of the ISA raise concerns on the deterioration of human rights standards in Malaysia and raise serious questions on the role of the police and abuse of power.

In recent events, The Prime Minister announced his intention to quit the government and hand over power to his probable successor Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. The question now remains whether, the reform initiated by Prime Minister Pak Lah will continue and take effect or will it be a matter of the forgotten past. Will the Prime Minister’s reform agenda take place? Is the ISA gives the police wide and arbitrary powers to undermine the rights of the people?

We aim to discuss this issue and provide further information to the public at large.

Siphoning EPF money

On 'Why should Valuecap borrow from EPF?' Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud: MTUC condemns the government's move to bail out Valuecap to support the local stock market using RM5 billion from EPF, as the provident fund is the custodian of the workers' money and not some sort of ‘automated teller machine' for the government.
If at all the EPF were to lend its money to the government, it has to be under the condition that there be transparency and accountability in the activities for which the money has been purposed. We want to know who is doing what with the money that belongs to the workers. This is the hard-earned money of the workers, their retirement plan. How is this bailout plan going to benefit the workers? We also question the reason for this bailout. If the economic fundamentals in Malaysia are strong and reserves sufficient as has been stated several times by the government, then why is there a need to offer so much money to the GLCs? Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop should prove how the EPF would profit from this loan. Bernama had reported that Nor had given the assurance that the loan given out by EPF would reap profits for the fund judging from Valuecap's past performance. But where is the paperwork and calculations to show that this move will benefit the EPF? MTUC is concerned that the loan might be mismanaged or misused and this, in turn, would affect the returns for the contributors. Mere assurances are not enough. We want to proof that this RM5 billion will not go down the drain. (The writer is president, MTUC). Sharyn: The government wants to use our pension money to prop up the Malaysian stock market which is the playing field of the rich people. If so, the government must ensure that the EPF account holders - who are predominantly the poor to average citizens of Malaysia - be guaranteed all of our pension money with a compound 8% growth (interest). It's so selfish and sick of the government to use the poor's pension money to help the rich to make more money with all the risks taken by the poor/average citizen. We can better use the RM% billion loans to Valuecap for our children's education, shelter, medical bills etc. Why not get those rich people to prop up the share market instead? Why should they park their money overseas and gamble with our EPF money instead? Kumar14: Who is behind this Valuecap organisation? Why suddenly, this separate entity is allowed to access funds from the EPF? Are they capable enough to handle it or is it just another desperate and blind move? It has been a very infamous trend where the people's funds are channeled to a company for investment purposes and suddenly POP! the funds disappear and there is nobody to be held responsible but a RM2 shell company. Charge who? Sue whom? The RM2 company (just a registered name)? We have seen this many times. People in power and with connections allow such things to go through and reap/rob the people's wealth and then blame it on organisations which actually don't exist. What if a lot of EPF funds are looted via such scams and nobody is to be pointed at? Where will the government get the funds to replenish the EPF? The people are very bored, disappointed, angry and frustrated at seeing all these dumb and unaccounted for measures being allowed by the government with lame excuses. Please, somebody verify the true purpose, integrity and capability of anybody attempting to use the people's fund.
